The Cognitive Flywheel of Time

Architectural Whitepaper

A system of architectures for navigational intelligence, structural verification, and coherent collaboration

Intelligence is not the ability to maximize reward or converge to optimal trajectories. It is the capacity to preserve coherent directionality and identity under sustained drift, irreversible accumulation, and regime pressure. — NC2.5, Definition of Intelligence

Maksim Barziankou (MxBv) · PETRONUS Research · March 2026

1. Overview

This document describes the Cognitive Flywheel of Time — a unified self-reinforcing architecture where theory, protocols, and operational layers form a single loop. Each layer is the same structural principle projected onto a different domain.

The system is built on a single structural claim: bounded adaptive systems cannot preserve identity through optimization alone. They require admissibility — a non-causal structural predicate that excludes forbidden continuations before any evaluation, planning, or action selection occurs. This claim is formalized in Navigational Cybernetics 2.5 (NC2.5), which serves as the kernel of the entire system.

2. Flywheel Architecture

The Cognitive Flywheel of Time consists of six layers. Theory produces formal constraints. Constraints become protocols. Protocols become tools. Tools serve the community. Community generates verification data. Data refines theory. The loop closes.

LayerComponentStructural Role
KernelNC2.5 v2.1Formal theory: 61 axioms, 69 theorems, 21 lemmas defining the admissibility-first architectural class
MiddlewareProtocolsECR-VP, CBS, HVC, GAG, CogOS, CSSP — verification, gating, compression, synchronization

The isomorphism across layers is structural: community verification instantiates ECR-VP principles at the social scale. The cockpit instantiates NC2.5 constraints at the personal scale. Each layer reinforces every other through the same underlying architecture.

3. Navigational Cybernetics 2.5 — Kernel

NC2.5 is a closed axiomatic framework for long-horizon adaptive systems in which drift — not equilibrium — is the primary structural medium of irreversible evolution.

Core Structural Principles

  • Admissibility is prior to action, meaning, and optimization. It is a categorical exclusion over effect-classes, not a penalty or trade-off.
  • Drift is inevitable and navigable. Zero drift is possible only in trivial or isolated systems (Axiom 6).
  • Internal time τ is bounded. Viability depletes under structural exposure, including passive exposure: structural pressure P(t) > 0 (Axiom 61).
  • Spin is necessary. Purely potential dynamics collapse to equilibrium on bounded trajectories. Non-stagnant identity requires a non-potential dynamical component (Theorem 62).
  • Cybernetics 2.5 is the unique stable intermediate: both admissibility surfaces (ingress and egress) are visible but neither is exploitable (Theorem 69).

v2.1 Expansion (March 2026)

170 pages. 61 axioms. 69 theorems. 21 lemmas. Version 2.1 adds structural pressure, regime depth, multi-agent coordination enforcement, and the gate bifurcation theorem proving Cybernetics 2.5 as the unique stable architecture in the class. A structural hardening pass equips the document with proof-status stratification, five canonical falsification witness forms, and a minimal counterexample protocol.

Dual Gate Structure

NC2.5 describes two admissibility surfaces and the navigable geometry between them. The ingress gate regulates what may acquire meaning-level authority. The egress gate regulates what may acquire action-level authority. The inter-gate space — where drift, spin, τ, pressure, regime depth, and phase debt operate — is the domain of NC2.5. The gates are asymmetric: the ingress gate is architecturally prior.

4. D3A — Orchestration

Directional-Deformation-Dissipation Architecture (D3A) translates NC2.5 structural constraints into operational form. Where NC2.5 defines what is admissible, D3A provides the decision architecture for what to do, when, and at what structural cost.

D3A operates within the inter-gate geometry: it respects the ingress gate (what may become content), navigates through the drift-spin-pressure landscape, and submits candidate actions to the egress gate for admissibility evaluation.

PETRONUS as Brand and Architecture

PETRONUS is the unified architectural namespace under which the flywheel operates: theory, protocols, community, and operational infrastructure share a single identity. D3A is the orchestration layer within this namespace.

PETRONUS Foundation

10% of all company profits are permanently and irrevocably allocated to a charitable foundation dedicated to helping those who cannot ask for help themselves. This commitment is embedded in the organizational charter.

5. Protocols

The protocol layer provides the middleware between NC2.5 theory and operational deployment. Each protocol addresses a specific structural problem within the admissibility-first class.

ECR-VP — Epistemic Coherence Review and Verification Protocol

Multi-interpreter structural coherence assessment for knowledge corpora. Multiple AI interpreters independently analyze the same corpus; a synthesis aggregator maps convergence, divergence, and coverage gaps into a coherence map. The protocol enforces regime isolation between interpreters and prevents cross-contamination of assessments. Deployed as Electron application with cloud backend (14 providers, 26 endpoints, 3 pricing tiers).

CBS — Coherence-Budgeted Admissibility Control

Dynamic budget mechanism that binds irreversible structural load to transition admissibility. CBS maintains a monotonically contracting continuity budget τ = C − Φ, where Φ accumulates irreversibly with each interpretive transition. Candidate transitions are categorically permitted or denied based on load delta, budget preservation, and forbidden-class conditions. The gating module operates independently of interpretive engine scoring and returns no proximity signal — only binary permit/deny.

HVC — Hierarchical Verification Compression

Transforms O(n²) pairwise document comparison into O(k) typed verification queries through three-tier compression. First tier: canonical entity extraction and drift-severity classification. Second tier: cross-corpus reference graph (CCRG) with four sub-graphs — term, claim, dependency, regime. Third tier: minimum proof slice extraction (2–5K tokens per slice regardless of corpus size). Reduces premium interpreter usage to 1.5–4.5% of total corpus.

CBS, HVC, and GAG form a coordinated architectural triad: HVC provides the structural map, GAG provides non-causal authorization gating, CBS provides the dynamic budget. No single protocol subsumes the others.

GAG — Grounding-Admissibility Gating

Regulates the binding of abstract commitments to concrete consequences. The gating interface is non-reconstructible: output normalization, timing normalization, and bounded query budgets prevent interpretive engines from approximating boundary geometry.

CogOS — Cognitive Operating System

Operational computing architecture for cognitive navigation. Maintains typed stores (Temporal, Structural, Operational), session state across context truncation, and admissibility-constrained continuation. Anchor mechanism enables cold-start recovery without full history replay.

CSSP — Cognitive State Synchronization Protocol

Multi-agent coordination under irreversible state evolution. Four jointly necessary coordination conditions (CC-1 through CC-4) proven in NC2.5 v2.1 (Theorem 67, Lemma 21). Enables agent turnover, model updates, and context truncation without loss of structural continuity.

6. Synthetic Conscience — Network Layer

Synthetic Conscience (SC) is an operational layer that translates human values and ethical consequences into formal parameters. It originated within PETRONUS as a mechanism for turning everyday care into systemic help — through IoT devices for animal welfare — and generalized into a platform for researchers, writers, scientists, and system architects who work with meaning and structural responsibility.

The computational backbone is the ΔE-CAS-T architecture: a self-regulating system that continuously balances precision against adaptation. It measures whether a system's actions remain coherent with its declared values, produces a numeric coherence index, and adjusts behavioral variability accordingly. When coherence drops, the system dampens; when it holds, the system explores. This gives SC a formal mechanism for translating ethical intention into operational regulation.

Market of Good

The Market of Good is the trading layer within Synthetic Conscience. Each participant manages a publicly visible structural commitment to the coherence of their published work. This commitment depletes through incoherent publication and replenishes through verified contributions attested by others. Published protocols are verifiable through PETRONUS tools (ECR-VP, HVC); verification results become part of the permanent record. Collaboration matching operates on structural domain overlap, not social proximity.

7. Arctodus simus — Structural Navigation Agent

Arctodus simus is a structural navigation agent designed within the NC2.5 architectural class. Named after the short-faced bear (Arctodus simus) — the largest terrestrial mammalian predator of the Pleistocene.

Operational Characteristics

  • Navigates the inter-gate geometry without collapsing admissibility into optimization
  • Maintains structural memory across sessions through drift-aware continuation
  • Operates under bounded internal time — respects τ-exhaustion and structural pressure
  • Enforces coordination invariants (CC-1 through CC-4) in multi-agent environments
  • Provides pre-semantic structural revelation: exposes constraint topology without authorizing action

Architectural Constraints

  • Does not optimize reward, minimize loss, or pursue scalar objectives (Axiom 48)
  • Does not simulate conversation. Navigates structural space.
  • Is not a wrapper around language models. May use LLMs as components but is defined by the NC2.5 class, not by its substrate.

8. Community Platform

The PETRONUS Community is a collaboration platform for system architects and researchers. It instantiates the flywheel at the social scale: researchers publish architectures, verify them through structural tools, find collaborators, and build joint systems.

Structure

  • Irreversible structural attestation (Approval) distinct from interest signal (Upvote)
  • Verification integration: published architectures assessable through PETRONUS protocols
  • Formal collaboration workflow with status tracking and domain-based matching

Flywheel Function

Protocols verify community content. Community data informs protocol refinement. Improved protocols attract researchers. Researchers generate architectures. Architectures become verifiable. The loop closes.

9. Cockpit — Personal Navigation

The Cockpit is a personal navigation system and the individual's interface to the PETRONUS ecosystem. It applies NC2.5 structural principles to personal operation.

Internal time τ maps to personal viability budget. Drift maps to accumulated decisions and commitments. Admissibility maps to the structural conscience that gates irreversible personal commitments. Structural pressure maps to environmental demands that consume viability under passive continuation.

10. Structural Isomorphism

Each row represents the same structural principle operating at a different level of organization.

11. Summary

The Cognitive Flywheel of Time is a system of architectures unified by a single structural principle: admissibility is prior to action, meaning, and optimization. NC2.5 provides the formal kernel. D3A provides orchestration. Six protocol families provide middleware. Synthetic Conscience provides the network layer. Arctodus simus provides autonomous navigation. The Cockpit provides personal interface. The Community Platform provides collaboration infrastructure.

Each component is a projection of the same architecture onto its operational domain. The flywheel accelerates because improvement in any layer structurally improves every other layer.
